Welcome to Wellness Matters!

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of Healthy Emory, I am very excited to introduce the first edition of "Wellness Matters," a new monthly e-newsletter for employees of Emory Healthcare and Emory University, which will replace "All About Health" and "Wellness Wednesdays." This newsletter, compiled by Emory Wellness and Emory Healthcare Employee Health, will bring health and wellness to you by way of informational articles, news stories, resources and events.

As chair of the Healthy Emory Executive Committee, I have had the privilege of seeing Emory work diligently to create and sustain a culture of well-being through the implementation of programs, services, policies, and environmental enhancements. As part of our commitment to creating a work environment that supports your health and well-being goals, we want you to have the tools and resources you need to live healthy and flourish - in mind, body, and spirit. It is our hope that "Wellness Matters" will assist you in reaching these goals.

In health,

Linda McCauley, PhD, RN, FAAN, FAAOHN

Dean, Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing; Chair, Healthy Emory Executive Committee

Health through my lens
"To me, health and wellness are about doing the right things for your mind, body and spirit. Activities such as eating right, exercising, spending time with family and friends and going to church support my entire well-being. I think focusing on all aspects of our health is extremely important, because, if you focus on your health (and we help you along the way), you will be in the right frame of mind, physically and mentally, to deliver the outstanding care our patients deserve." - Daniel S. Owens, MBA, Chief Executive Officer, Emory University Hospital Midtown

Emory Saint Joseph's dedicates new walking path
Emory Saint Joseph's Hospital (ESJH) dedicated a new, outdoor/indoor walking path with a special ribbon cutting ceremony on National Walking Day, Wednesday, April 6, 2016. Healthy Emory and ESJH partnered to create this safe, well-marked path for all to enjoy. New signage marks the pathways, indicating distance markers and offering safety and health tips for walkers. Congratulations to ESJH for helping to make health and wellness a priority for your hospital staff, patients, families, and visitors.

Wellness Champions spread the message of healthy living throughout Emory

At a recent luncheon to thank Emory's Wellness Champions, a timeline showed just how far the program has come in the three years since its inception.

Begun in January 2013 with 14 Emory employees, the program today has 108 Wellness Champions throughout the units of Emory University and Emory Healthcare.

The program is part of Healthy Emory, an initiative established in 2013 to develop an inclusive approach to health promotion, well-being, recreation, fitness and healthy living across Emory. The Champions' main responsibilities are sharing information about Emory's health and wellness programs and encouraging healthier habits within their work areas.

Keep it local
Buying locally decreases the potential for nutrient losses so you're getting the most out of your food. Produce that is grown locally travels less distance than other produce so farmers can pick them at peak harvest times. Learn more about the benefits of eating locally and seasonally.
